happy cat getting chin scratches; cat care tips

September means it’s Happy Cat Month—an excuse to celebrate our adorable, goofy feline friends! Whether your kitty is a cuddly lap warmer or a playful pouncer, this month is all about keeping them happy and healthy. So, let’s dive into some cat care tips to help your furry friends live their best nine lives.

Cat Facts 101

Historians estimate that cats have been our faithful companions for over 10,000 years! There are over 58 million pet cats in America and another 100 million self-sufficient feral cats roaming the streets. Over the years, cats have helped control rodent populations, served as therapy animals, and been our loyal companions. One cat, Stubbs, was even mayor of an Alaska town for 20 years!

While many think of cats as self-reliant, low-maintenance pets, they’re actually incredibly social animals. They require the same level of care and attention that we lavish on our dogs and other companion animals.

Top 5 Cat Care Tips

While no two cats are the same, these cat care tips cover the basics of keeping your furry friend happy and healthy! If you have specific questions about your cat’s health or behavior, our team is happy to help. Just give us a call to schedule

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

Just like us, cats need regular check-ups. Even if your cat seems perfectly healthy, annual vet visits help identify potential health changes early on. This is especially important because cats are experts at masking discomfort. Annual exams and routine diagnostics give your veterinarian the chance to spot subtle signs of illness. Preventive care can extend your cat’s life and ensure they remain in tip-top shape for years to come.

Annual Dental Cleanings

Dogs aren’t the only pets who are prone to dental disease! Cats can also suffer from painful gum disease, tooth decay, and even more serious conditions like abscesses and oral infections. Cats are especially prone to a condition known as tooth resorption, which affects an estimated 20-60% of all cats. Purebred cats are most susceptible to tooth resorption, with Siamese and Persian cats having the highest rate.

Keep Kitties Entertained

Cats are naturally curious, playful, and intelligent creatures (which can sometimes get them into trouble!) Without appropriate outlets, they can become bored, stressed, or even develop behavioral issues. For example, bored cats can destroy furniture, yowl at night, or nip and bite to get your attention. Interactive toys, scratching posts, puzzle feeders, and sunny window perches are great ways to keep your cat mentally stimulated and out of trouble.

Keep Up with Grooming

Even though cats are known for their self-grooming abilities, pampering can be a beneficial bonding experience between you and your feline friend. Regular brushing reduces shedding and the risk of hairballs while also promoting healthy skin and fur. Long-haired cats, in particular, may need daily brushing to prevent matting. Grooming sessions also give you the chance to check for any unusual lumps, bumps, or parasites like fleas.

Feed a Balanced Diet

Keeping cats happy and healthy means maintaining a healthy weight through proper nutrition. A proper diet supports your cat’s immune system, helps maintain their ideal weight, and reduces the risk of serious illnesses. Overweight cats are more prone to diabetes, joint problems, arthritis, and heart disease. Cats with extra body fat may also deal with pain and stiffness or have a harder time appropriately grooming themselves. You can talk to your vet about the right food for your cat’s age, size, and any specific health needs.
